Before I went to Europe a few years ago, people told me to take night trains. You basically save time traveling and save money because you sleep on the train and don´t have to pay for a hotel room. I never thought that I would be doing it on buses in South America.
The first leg was a 10 hour bus ride from Latacunga to Huaquillas. Then a five Dollar taxi ride to the immagration office and then a $15 taxi ride from Huaquillas to Tumbes the Peruvian boarder town.
After that I took a”collectivo” to Mancora a quaint beach town. In Mancora I rented a body board and fins. It was a good 2-3 with an occasional 6.
Five sole “bus” ride from Tumbes to Mancora.
Moto Taxi in Mancora. Its a motorcycle that has a carriage on the back.
Then it was another night bus to Trajuillo. Trajuillo is a pretty dumpy town. There were some interesting ruins that surround the city. The cab rides were where the most dangerous part of the trip. I thought we were going to get T-boned 3 times in one cab ride.

That pyramid structure is made out of these bricks
The archaeological site known as Chan Chan out west of Trujillo… Hmmm the name sounds suspiciously chinese.
Then it was another night bus to Lima. The hours tend to blend together so I dont remember if it was a 9, 10 or 11 hour bus ride. All I know is that it was dark when i got on the bus and then it was light when we arrived in Lima. At this point I really wanted a hot shower and to change my clothes.
Lima is an interesting town. It flanks the ocean much like Malibu with cliffs and a beach below. I stayed in the neighborhood called Barranco at the Point hostel.
Main Plaza in Old Town Lima
I love the water canon. Its so under used these days.
The beach below Barranco and Mira Flores. The Limoese love that dirty water.
This was a cool 7×7 field turf soccer field right on the beach. Bars flanked both sides of the field. Portland needs one of these.
Street perfomer in Lima. This guy stole my move.
Sunset in Lima
How’s Lima treating you so far? I’m gonna ask you all these questions before I get there. Enjoy the Moto Taxi. lol! Those are common in Thailand, so get used to it if you are travelling there. Take care!
